Who are we, er.. rather who am I?

Where to start? I am a filmmaker... I think...I started at an early age as a problem solver. It started with taking stuff apart, loosing parts and losing out. Eventually I started putting stuff back together. I became fascinated by how things worked. Growing up in the "Sticks" meant things were powered by gasoline. My fascination was directed into making things go fast. Eventually my father scored a Tandy TRS-80 computer and my passion was split between cars and computers. The point of the car was to go fast, but at the time, the computer had no other point than itself. This was all quite fine. I excelled with computer "stuff" all though school, but at the time, computing on a small scale was more of a novelty. It quickly got tabled.

Growing up in the "Sticks" meant things were powered by gasoline.

In high school I had a art teacher that let me loose with a camera and the developing lab. That was fantastic. The computer hobby ended - photography began. Fresh out of school, I wanted to do something "non-traditional" for my bread. I was pretty awful with school. I loved music, photography and cars. I could do none of those things to make a buck. I went back to computers for money. To keep a timeline , this is somewhere around 1993/4. I started working the dead man’s shift at a bank operating mainframes. The night shift made it hard to mesh with normal folks, particularly hard in a small town.

I later abandoned the bank for a mill. In the new role, one of my computers was about the size of a small u-haul, water-cooled no less. Due to luck, this job was still the night shift in the same small town. I then went to Atlanta to work with a cable company. Mainframes again. Nights again. We are up to 1997. 3 years of nights.

Right around the Dot-Com beginning, desperate to get a day shift job, I interviewed at IBM for their internet project. I was a surprisingly good fit. I supported all the Macintosh computers for the designers, media directors and other creative folks. I had access to some great new tech. The most important was the Beta Cam, then the Mini DV cam. I was stunned at the quality of these tiny cameras. At that point I started down the path of a film maker.

I continued to work with the IBM Events team. My tour included Wimbledon, Roland Garros, Australian Open, US Open tennis, Masters Golf and lastly the Tony Awards. I was working with some real cutting edge stuff in the area of live web video. Fun times. I learned the value of a solid team. I learned how to make it work with what I had... and make it work well. I also got a few US Patents on the way. Tandem to this I was creating films and music videos on the side. At some point, I had to make a hard decision.

Today I am a problem solver. I chose to solve problems with information. I guess you can say I am still in Information Technology. I am working with a cutting edge camera. I get points across. It combines all my passions in to one trade. I get to take great photography. I find music that tells its own story and helps me tell my story. If the tools don't exist to tell my story, I will create them. I come from different place that a lot of fellow filmmakers. Hopefully that’s will end up as a good thing.
